The Treatment

What Is a De-Shed & De-Matt Treatment?

A specialist grooming service that goes beyond a standard bath and brush — designed to remove loose undercoat, reduce shedding at home, and carefully work through matted or knotted fur, restoring your dog's coat to a healthy, manageable condition.

At Oscar's on Bristol Road, Gloucester, Caroline uses a carefully selected blend of pre-wash treatments, shampoo, and deep conditioner, followed by professional high-velocity drying to loosen and blast away trapped undercoat. The result is a dramatically reduced shed and a coat that is genuinely easier to maintain.

Multi-Stage Treatment

The De-Shed Process at Oscar's

1
Pre-wash treatment

Specialist products applied before bathing to loosen the undercoat and prepare the coat for maximum release.

2
De-shed shampoo wash

Formulated to open the coat and lift dead fur from root to tip throughout.

3
Deep conditioning treatment

Conditions the coat, reduces static, and makes the brush-out more effective.

4
High-velocity blow dry

Professional dryers physically blast the loose undercoat away — dramatically reducing what ends up on your sofa.

5
Brush out & finish

Thorough hand brushing to remove remaining loose fur and leave the coat smooth and tidy.

De-Matting

Handled With Care — Never Rushed

Matting can develop quickly in curly, wavy, or long-coated breeds, or in dogs who have not been brushed regularly between grooms. Oscar's de-matting service is thorough, patient, and always carried out with your dog's comfort as the priority.

  • For heavily matted dogs — altered or split appointments may be recommended to reduce stress
  • Mats are worked through carefully — never simply cut away unless it is genuinely the kindest option
  • Caroline will talk through what she finds and advise on prevention going forward

There is no judgement here. Life gets busy. Caroline's job is to get your dog comfortable.

Common Questions

FAQs

How often should my dog have a de-shed treatment?+

For heavy shedding breeds, every 6–8 weeks during peak shedding seasons (spring and autumn) makes a significant difference. Caroline will advise on the right frequency for your dog's coat at their first appointment.

Will a de-shed treatment stop my dog shedding at home?+

It will not stop shedding entirely — that is natural — but it dramatically reduces the volume of loose fur. Combined with regular brushing at home, most owners notice a significant and lasting reduction.

My dog is heavily matted. Can you still help?+

Yes. Caroline is experienced in de-matting all coat types, including very heavily matted coats. For dogs with significant matting, she may recommend altered or split appointments. She will always talk through the options before starting.

How long does a de-shed treatment take?+

A full de-shed appointment typically takes 2–4 hours depending on breed, coat condition, and volume of undercoat. Caroline will give you a more accurate estimate when you call to book.

Is the de-shed treatment suitable for all dog breeds?+

Yes — all breeds are considered at Oscar's. Whether a heavy shedding double-coated breed or a curly-coated breed prone to matting, Caroline has the experience and specialist products to treat your dog's coat effectively and safely.
